Ephesus played a decisive role in the spread of Christian faith throughout the Roman Empire. Two important Councils of the early Church were held at Ephesus in 431 and 449 CE. The remains of the Basilica of St. John on Ayasuluk Hill and those of the Church of Mary in Ephesus are testament of the city's importance to Christianity. The house of Mother Mary was bestowed the title of an official place of Catholic pilgrimage in the 1800s after years of debates. Three popes visited the site; Pope Paul VI(1967), Pope John Paul II(1979) and Pope Benedict XVI (2006). * Flexibility - In private guided tours the schedule is more flexible. * Saving Time - Knowing the best things to see and do can be difficult, especially with limited time.
