Lake Kuyucuk

Nestled amidst scenic mountains in the northeastern Turkish province of Kars lies the high-altitude Lake Kuyucuk. Fed by snowmelt from surrounding peaks, its crystal clear waters shine vividly against the dramatic landscape. As one of the largest freshwater lakes in Eastern Anatolia, Kuyucuk provides vital habitat for diverse plants and animals adapted to harsh continental conditions. Several endangered bird and fish species call Lake Kuyucuk home. In summer, flamingos gather by the thousands to feed and breed along the lakeshore. Hikers and birdwatchers flock here to spot them from observation decks. Short walking trails lead around the lake through meadows filled with colorful wildflowers like poppies and sage. On overcast days, the still waters reflect jagged mountains swathed in greenery.
